Our project was presented at the last conference of the Society for Latin American Studies (SLAS), which took place at the Centre for Latin American Research and Documentation (CEDLA) of the University of Amsterdam on 1 July 2024. Two members of our term, Laura Cucchi and Juan Neves-Sarriegui, contributed to a panel where they discussed problems related to the approaches to the global history of democracy, the main developments of democracy in 19th century Latin America, and the four themes of our Gerda Henkel Project: diversity and formal and informal exclusions, the freedom of the press, parliamentary cultures, and the transatlantic and transnational circulation of ideas. The SLAS is a UK-based professional association that brings together scholars with an interest in the region and organises annual conferences for the discussion of the most recent research on Latin America.
