In November 2024, Laura Cucchi was awarded the Premio “Academia Nacional de la Historia – Obras Inéditas 2024” (National Academy of Argentine History Prize for Unpublished Works 2024) for her manuscript La República y “la causa de la democracia”. Diaristas, impresores y tipógrafos en Buenos Aires, 1867–1873.
The book analyzes the writings and public initiatives of a group of European and South American émigrés who arrived in Buenos Aires during the 1850s and 1860s and became prominent advocates of democratic reform. The group included the printer Alejandro Bernheim, the journalist Manuel Bilbao, the jurist Florentino González, and the typographer José Félix Aldao. Together, they published the newspaper La República in 1867. Through this publication, they articulated a set of proposals aimed at steering the republican systems of South America in a more democratic direction at a moment when they perceived these regimes to be shifting toward increasingly centralized and authoritarian forms of governance.
The book is scheduled for publication in 2026 by EUDEBA, the publishing house of Universidad of Buenos Aires.
